Statistics

According to 2001 Census, the total population of Shahdol district is 908148, out of which 391027 are Scheduled Tribes and 67528 are Scheduled Castes. In this manner, Shahdol district is a Tribal dominated district.

From Geographical point of view, this district consists of a series of mountain ranges and rivers. It can be divided into three physical divisions :

1. High Lands of mountain ranges.

2. The Central Plateau.

3. Low Lands of Rivers:- A number of rivers including Son and Murna  flow in  the district. Maikal  mountain   range is extended  from Southern part of the district to the Eastern part.

 

Administrative Structure

This district is divided into 04 Tahsils, 05 Janpads and 391 village Panchayats. There are 02 Nagarpalikas and 04 Nagarpanchayats. One third part of the district is covered with forest.

Climate and Rain

The climate of the district is temperate. It rains from June to October in the district. The temperature remains the highest in the month of June and the Lowest in the Month of January. The maximum and minimum temperature of the district remains 46oC and 2.6oC respectively.

Forest

Sal, Amla, Teak, Sarai and Shisham are the main trees found in this district. The flower of Mahua and Guli provide us edible oil. Mahua flower is mostly used for making wine by tribal people.

Mines and Minerals

There are a number of Coal mines in the district and Coal is found from the southern part of the district. Besides this, there are Mines of Fire-Clay, Red & Yellow ochers and marbles.

Industries

According to the 1998 Survey, there are 116 industries (Large Scale & Small Scale) in the whole district. The famous Orient Paper Mill is situated in Amlai. Small Scale industries of Polothene and Baskets of Bamboo are also run in the district.

Electricity

One no. 132 KV sub-station and 9 nos. 33/11 KV sub-stations are working for efficient supply and proper voltage maintenance of electricity in Shahdol District.

Transportation

From transportation point of view, road is the main means of Transportation. Pakki road is about 955.4 Kms. and Kachhi road is about 1707.59 Kms. Railway facility is also available towards Katni and towards Bilaspur.

Education

There is vast expansion of education in the district. In about 95% villages, the facility of Primary Schools is available.

Post and Telecommunication

There are one Head Post Office and 137 Post Offices and their braches working in the whole district.

Public Health

Besides one District Hospital, there are 5 Community Health Centres, 31 Primary Health Centres, 26 Ayurvedic Dispensaries, 4 Homeopathic Dispensaries and 194 Sub-Health Centres working in the district.

Other Facilities

There are 9 Veterinary Hospitals, 39 Veterinary Dispensaries and One wool Production Centre working  in the district. Besides them, there are 08 Police Stations and 03 Police Posts working in the district. In order to provide Drinking Water facility, the facility of Hand Pumps has been provided in 831 villages. There are 387 Shops working under Public Distribution System. These shops distribute Rice, Wheat, Sugar and Kerosine Oil.

Agriculture

Paddy, Kodo, Kutko and Maize are the crops of the district. Til, Mustard and Groundnut are the main oilseeds produced here. The farmers have started the production of Sunflowers and Soyabean. In the central and southern part of the district, paddy is the main Crop grown and in the North-West Wheat is the main crop grown.
